“In olden days, a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking. But now, anything goes.” —Cole Porter, 1934

Despite the many years since Cole Porter wrote those now famous lyrics, some things have changed yet many things remain. Having grown up wearing school uniforms for most of my life, developing a sense of style and learning how to regard fashion was initially challenging for me. It wasn’t until I was in my twenties that I really got the concept. What I learned was that fashion is art and fashion is fun and fashion should represent your own personal style.

Fashion can reflect your mood, your emotional state or even your politics. But mostly fashion choices should enhance you, who you really are. My mother always said, “Wait long enough and everything old will be new again!” She was right. I’ve seen trends return many years later, perhaps reinterpreted, but essentially the same. Hemlines rise and fall. Color palettes run the spectrum from year to year. If your closet is large enough, perhaps you can recycle some of your favorites from long ago—maybe they will still fit? Whatever, it’s fun! Have a great time shopping for this fall’s latest styles.
